LaPoynor ISD Updates:

December 14, 2020

Dear LaPoynor I.S.D. parents and community,

During this uncertain time, I want to assure you that we are continually monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and making every effort to keep our staff and students safe while providing the very best learning opportunities for our students.  At this time, we are experiencing a high rate of illness district-wide, which diminishes the productive learning environment that is in the best interest of our students.   Additionally, we want each of our students, staff and their families to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

In an effort to achieve this, the district feels that it is in the best interest of our students, staff, family, and community members to extend the holiday break for the remainder of this week, beginning December 15, 2020.   The additional closure time will give our maintenance and custodial staff the opportunity to disinfect the school thoroughly, which will provide for a safe return after the holidays.  The district calendar contains additional minutes above the required number so that this closure will not have to be made up.

For the scheduled school days, December 15th, 16th, and 17th, LaPoynor ISD will be closed and will remain closed throughout the Christmas and New Year’s break.  Students will resume in-person attendance as scheduled January 5th, 2021.   Once again, we thank you for your support during these uncertain times.  We wish everyone a safe, happy holiday season.

Dr. James R. Young

Superintendent, LaPoynor ISD

December 9, 2020

Dear LaPoynor I.S.D. parents and community,

If there is one thing I have learned from COVID-19, it is that this situation is constantly changing and it is very difficult if not impossible to predict, prepare, or plan for the numerous variations arising from the pandemic. Having said that, we are doing our best to provide an education for all students, provide some sense of normalcy, and keep everyone as safe as possible.

To accomplish this, the district feels that it is in the best interest of our students, staff, family, and community members to modify our instructional process for the remaining school schedule ending on December 17, 2020. This has become necessary because two teachers and one non-instructional staff member has tested positive during the current school week. The teachers have not been in district this week, and the additional staff member was only in district on Monday, so the spread may be contained.

Thus, for the scheduled school days, December 10 th and 11th as well as December 14 th -17 th, Parents may choose to let their students utilize remote instruction or send their students to the district for face to face instruction. As always, we thank you for working with our district through this very difficult time. If you have COVID concerns, we will honor any reasonable request that you would need to make you and your child feel safe.

Dr. James R. Young

Superintendent, LaPoynor I.S.D.

Greetings LaPoynor Family:

LaPoynor Independent School District experienced two positive COVID-19 tests within our staff over the weekend. Due to these events, the district will transition to virtual learning for the remainder of this school week, November 17- 20, in an effort to ensure that our community’s exposure to COVID 19 is diminished.

During this time and the following week, November 23-27, which is Thanksgiving break, all campuses will remain closed and no extra-curricular competitive events will occur on district property. Students who are involved in events held outside of the district may participate in those events if they have no exposure to or symptoms of Covid-19. Extra-curricular students may meet at the district for transportation and preparation for off-campus events, but coaches must screen all participants upon arrival.

The district anticipates a return to in-person instruction on November 30, 2020, but in the event that this is not possible, we will provide further guidance and information as necessary. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time, we all realize that each family is experiencing their own difficulties because of the pandemic. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance. Stakeholders may obtain support from administrators by using the contact information below or via district email.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. James R. Young

LaPoynor ISD Update

Good afternoon members of the LaPoynor:

As I type this message today, I know that we all share the hope that this situation will be resolved soon. Until then, we will continue working to provide essential services to all of our students. This is a confusing time and we are available if you need assistance or questions answered. I have posted contact information for administrators below.

Recently, I noticed several comments on social media concerning LaPoynor Independent School District’s status while closed. Previously, I released a statement that listed our district’s closure as undefined by using the word indefinite. I chose this description because I did not want to adjust the dates of closure numerous times and I felt this course of action would aid families in preparation for having children at home for an extended period. The truth is we simply do not know when we will be able to resume classes in a normal fashion, but rest assured, we will reopen as soon as it is possible to do so in a safe manner for our community.

In reference to district operations, we are discovering new challenges every day that produce communication and logistical issues, but we believe we are on pace to deliver or provide pick up for food to our students on Monday March 30, 2020 and continuing every weekday unless governmental officials force this service to stop. If you have questions or concerns about this, please contact your student’s campus principal. Again, I have listed contact information for administrators below.

We also will begin delivery or pick up for student’s work as well as online classes on Tuesday March 31, 2020. This is a very difficult process and there is certainly a possibility of human error causing issues. Our entire staff is working hard to minimize issues, but if you find there are challenges please contact the appropriate administrator using the information listed below.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time, we all realize that each family is experiencing their own difficulties because of the pandemic. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. James R. Young

LaPoynor ISD Update 03/25/2020

Let me start by saying that we all miss our students and we are working diligently to help them as much as possible. We are looking forward to a time of reunification and normalcy returning to our district, but until then we will do our very best to meet the needs of our community. At this time, I would like to provide some updated information for everyone in an effort to keep you informed of the district’s progress on providing educational services for our students.

We intend to provide services to all district students beginning on Monday March 30, 2020. On that date, our nutritional services will begin with multiple delivery options. The first option available to students is a curbside pickup service at the campuses. We also will provide delivery services for meals via our bus routes. Further information and specific times will be provided in an update on Friday March 27, 2020.

Educational services will be delivered to students by Tuesday March 31, 2020. These services will also be delivered in multiple approaches. The district will be utilizing online as well as paper platforms in an effort to meet the varied needs of students in our community. Those students electing to use the paper format will have the option to retrieve packets during meal pick or have the packets delivered via our bus route system. Households have been contacted concerning these options and the necessary arrangements are almost complete. More information about this topic will be provided on Friday March 27, 2020.

Due to the closing of all schools in Texas and for the safety of our community, we are forced to limit the number of people and amount of time we have personnel in our schools. In spite of that, we have decided to keep our central offices open every weekday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. We will be here answering the phone if you have challenges that need to be addressed. We are also providing cell phone contact information below for each principal, the special education director, and myself if you need something addressed.

I want to close by saying we are doing our best to provide services for all the students in our care. I am sure we will have to make changes as needs arise and we are willing to work hard to make this evolution in education supportive and valuable for all stakeholders. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you feel we need to address something. I intend to continue to update the community weekly so please check our website and social media for new information on a regular basis.

Dr. James Young

Good afternoon LaPoynor community. I hope this message finds you all well and safe. I wanted to take a few minutes to update you on the actions we are taking as a school district. We are currently working to create a remote school service that will provide nutritional and educational services for all students. Please understand that we are attempting to do everything we can to keep our community safe while providing education for our students. We ask that you be patient with us as this is not something we have ever planned for, so we will need to adjust things as challenges arise.

First I want you to know that we are not expecting any products from students this week. We have applied for a waiver from the state to exempt students for the week of March 23rd through March 27th. We currently expect to provide services starting on March 30th. You will receive more information about this in the next couple of days.

Teachers have been directed to contact every student’s household today, March 23, 2020, to ascertain each student’s ability and need for services. When this information is complete, we will begin making arrangements to provide services remotely or physically each day. If for some reason your household was not contacted, please call your child’s school office.

Sometime around mid-week, when our plan is finalized, I will update this information with specific details about what to expect. I can tell you that our plan is to provide everything you need eliminating any requirement for anyone from your household to come to the school. If you have need of something from the school please call the office and we will arrange to get those items to you as we are limiting access to district at this time.

I realize that this is all inconvenient and unplanned for everyone of us. All of us at the school are here to help you, so please reach out to us if you have challenges with anything. LaPoynor is a great community and I believe that if we work together we can overcome this trying time and continue to successfully educate our children.

Dr. James Young

LaPoynor Independent School District will be closing indefinitely starting March 23, 2020 to support our community and health care professionals in the ongoing goal of containing the spread of the novel coronavirus, or COVID-19. Additionally, all extracurricular activities, practices and athletic events are suspended while we are closed.

We do not make this decision lightly. We fully realize it presents significant difficulties to working parents. However, we are hopeful that these measures will better ensure the long-term health and safety of children, staff, and the larger community.

LaPoynor Independent School District is finalizing logistics on distance learning options and the distribution of food to address children’s nutritional needs while school is out. More information and guidance will be made available on our website by March 27, 2020. We will also take this week to further clean schools and buses and restock custodial and nursing supplies.

Additionally, LaPoynor Independent School District asks the broader community to take the following reasonable precautions to prevent the spread of the illness:

  • Don’t shake hands
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Limit movement within the community, especially avoiding crowded places and maintaining 3 to 6 ft of distance between people (at least an arm’s length)
  • If you are moving around in the community, don’t congregate in large groups
  • For those who have traveled to areas with known COVID-19 cases – both inside and outside of the country – we ask that you self-quarantine and monitor for symptoms. Students who have traveled should plan to stay home for two weeks after arriving home. Please contact your campus to let them know, and this will be considered an excused absence.
  • If you suspect you have symptoms of COVID-19, call your health care provider for medical advice.
  • Keep your child at home if he/she feels ill, even if you think it is just a cold.
  • Do not leave the house if you are ill, except to access medical care

This is a quickly changing situation, and we will continue to monitor information, will assess conditions throughout the week, and will provide the next update by March 30, 2020 via our website, email, social media and the school APP.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we ensure that all members of the community in LaPoynor Independent School District stay safe and healthy.

LaPoynor ISD Response Protocols to Coronavirus

(Please note these protocols and responses are subject to change)

Regular School Day

  1. Teachers will work to ensure frequent handwashing of students often during the day. Handwashing should occur prior to any meals, and at a minimum of 3 to 4 additional times daily. Other times that handwashing should occur: after PE, after playing on the playground, use of the weight room, and use of computer labs. (Responsible Staff: All Teachers)
  2. Additional cleaning of desks, doorknobs, and keyboards during the day using cleaning wipes. Teachers should wipe your own desk, keyboard, and spaces as well. (Responsible Staff: Director of Maintenance and Classroom Teacher)
  3. Additional cleaning by our janitorial staff in the evenings. This would include wiping down desks, doorknobs, counter spaces and shared spaces. (Responsible Staff: Director of Maintenance and Operations)
  4. Additional cleaning of buses on a daily basis. (Responsible Staff: Director of Maintenance and Operations)
  5. Students running fever will be sent home immediately. While waiting to be picked up students will be quarantined in an identified designated location on each campus. (Responsible Staff: Campus Principal and Campus Nurse)
  6. Given the potential severity and observed rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus and the time lapse between onset of symptoms, diagnosis, and reporting, we will be working with our local health authorities to determine the severity in our local area. This information will be used in determining the need for school closures. (Responsible Staff: Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, School Nurses)
  7. Beginning 3/13/2020 LPISD will not allow visitors on campuses. (Responsible Staff: Principals)
  8. Please check the school website regularly for extra-curricular activities as they may be cancelled at any time.
  9. In an effort to minimize group interaction, student scheduling, including transportation, may be altered. We will notify parents as necessary.

School Closing

  1. School Closing will occur if the school closing serves the best interest of the students and local community. This decision will be made with the following considerations: confirmed cases in the local area defined as Henderson and Anderson County, Texas, number of staff that are sick, ability to provide basic supplies to students, recommendations by the local health department, CDC, and other government agencies. (Responsible Staff: Superintendent)
  2. A school closure will trigger at home instruction. See “LPISD StayAtHome-LearnAtHome SCHOOL Instructional Plan”. (Responsible Staff: Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Principals, Teachers, and Para Professionals)
  3. School Faculty, Staff, Parents, Students, and Community members will be able to access updates concerning school closures, re-opening, services, and latest updates at and LaPoynor ISD Facebook. (Responsible Staff: Principals, Teachers, IT Director)
  4. All School Personnel identified as “Essential” will report to work as needed and directed. Essential School Personnel will be notified by their direct supervisor. (Responsible Staff: Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, Directors, and Principals)
